UPSC Prelims Syllabus 2019: Pattern & Other Important Details

The Union Public Service Commission organizes the Civil Services (Preliminary) Examination each year, which is mandatory for all students who want to appear for Civil Services Examination and Indian Forest Service Examination.

This exam serves as the chief procedure for picking out the students for the Civil Services (Main) Examination.

The Civil Services Preliminary exam consists of mandatory papers of 200 marks each (General Studies Paper I and General Studies Paper II).

The questions are of objective type. The marks obtaining in prelims will not be included in the ranking procedure, it will merely be gateway Mains.

The pattern for Prelims Exam 


Paper – IGeneral Studies – This paper will be counted for qualifying to write the Civil Services Mains exam.200 MarksTwo Hours
Paper- II (CSAT)Aptitude Test (CSAT) – This paper is of qualifying nature, but candidate must score at least 33% marks in this paper. However, marks of this paper are not counted for writing the Mains examination.200 MarksTwo Hours

 

The Civil Services Preliminary exam will be consisting of two papers each of which provides 200 marks each (General Studies Paper I and General Studies Paper II). The questions will be designed as objective.

Paper 1General Studies: This section topics on Indian National Movement, Indian Polity, Basic Economic Understanding, Geography. the dynamic part will cover current affairs, General Knowledge.

Paper II Aptitude Test: Paper II is of vigorous aspect and comprises mathematics, reasoning, analytical ability, and interpersonal skills.

The Paper II is based on qualifying attributes the marks of which is not considered resulting in the merit list. It is obligatory for the students to obtain minimum 33 percent in this paper to clear the Prelims exam.

The question papers will be both in Hindi and English. Those who are visionless will be given the extra time of twenty minutes for each paper.

The pattern for Prelims Exam

The UPSC Prelims exam is intended to serve as assessment test. The marks in the Paper 1 are considered preparing the merit list for this exam. Those who have cleared the Prelims can attend the Mains exam. The marks in the Prelim exam is estimated for the final score of the Mains exam or the Interview.

The syllabus for the Preliminary Exams for Paper-I: 


Current events of national and international importance.

History of India and Indian National Movement.

Indian and World Geography-Physical, Social, Economic Geography of India and the World.

Indian Polity and Governance – Constitution, Political System, Panchayati Raj, Public Policy, Rights Issues, etc.

Economic and Social Development – Sustainable Development, Poverty, Inclusion, Demographics, Social Sector initiatives, etc.

General issues on Environmental Ecology, Bio-diversity and Climate Change

General Science

The syllabus for the Preliminary Exams for Paper-II: 


Comprehension

Interpersonal skills including communication skills;

Logical reasoning and analytical ability

Decision-making and problem solving

General mental ability

Basic numeracy (numbers and their relations, orders of magnitude, etc.) (Class X level), Data interpretation (charts, graphs, tables, data sufficiency etc. – Class X level)
